“The fundamental concept in social science is Power, in the same sense in which Energy is the fundamental concept in physics.” — Bertrand Russell, philosopher.

  • Power over:
    • State over us, parents over kids
    • Need to be educated to see
  • Power to:
    • Ability to make things happen, to shape our lives and the world
  • Power within: latent power, self-organization, create conditions for you to unleash your inner power not empower you
  • Power with:
    • See beyond my agenda
    • Cooperate even with oppressors
Power sources:
  1. Legitimate: roles/ institutions, elected
  2. Referent: charisma
  3. Expert: knowledge & experience
  4. Reward: offer
  5. Coercive: punish
  6. Information: hold info that has advantage
  7. Economical: status of finance (e.g. funders, investors)
Dimensions
  • Visible: Obama elected
  • Hidden: rich men behind pulling strings
  • Invisible: power of the norms, perpetuates thinking that result in visible & hidden powers ("This is not going to change"), entrenched because things on the surface change but the real culture doesn't, collection of beliefs and worldview of "the way things are"
Story Harvest

World Cafe: usual format is 1 question per round, I like using 2 question: the same for round 1 and 2 and then a convergent question for round 3 which helps you to move towards your purpose. "I" story to "We" story to "So what".

Power Flower
  • Group of 4: discuss 2 petals of power, which is the dominant group?
  • Privilege + Power = Oppression
